Lots of good tips for setting up the garden, thanks for the read. I've been worried about how my boxer mix is going to take to the new backyard - he's not a digger all the time, but sometimes he just lets loose and tears apart a plant or two.

Sally, the digging area depends a lot on your yard. I have mine near a compost pile. A friend of mine has their hidden by a shed and hedge.

I fill any dug areas every month with sawdust and old dirt. The dog actually stirs up more compostable material for me. He spends about an hour a day near the digging area. It keeps him cooler in the hot summer months when he digs and lays in the cooler soil.
I have a rake nearby and just smooth the soil and fill when necessary. My cattle dog is a compulsive digger and there is no way I can break him so I just give him his own area and he leaves the rest of the yard hole free. Denise

Sally, I have not noticed the mounded gardens using more water but they are also heavily mulched. If I thought they might need more water I would use the inverted pop bottle method. (two liter plastic pop bottle with the bottle placed in the ground upside down and filled with water for deep root watering) Denise

Deanna,
Each dog is different, but I would say one week working with the dog on the leash and if you set your garden up pet friendly they adapt even faster. I turn being around the gardens and special plantings into a game where they get rewarded and feel good and they behave well.

I had one stubborn dog where I used some of the heinz training spray or garlic spray and that cured him quickly. Denise

The mounded beds sound interesting. I was wondering if they took more water? I was also wondering about a digging area. How do you keep it looking good? Sally

Great article on a pet friendly garden. How long does it take to get your dog to behave near the garden?
