Indoor gardening has became a recent trend as people struggle to stay within their food budgets from month to month. The price of groceries has soared over the past few years and we are always looking for ways to cut down on spending. The internet can provide you with beautiful indoor garden ideas.

These tips should get you started.

The key to successful indoor gardening is what you choose to grow. Some herbs and vegetables will not fair well in an indoor setting because they need much more room than just a small container to grow in.

Dwarf varieties of plants tend to thrive a lot better with less effort then normal varieties. Tomatoes, peppers and radishes are all good ideas for indoor growing.

The container you choose for growing is also a big determining factor in how well your plants will prosper. Smaller plants will do just fine in smaller containers while those that grow to a substantial size will need for more room. Crowding a plants roots is a quick way to completely kill off the plant or stunt its growth.

Determining the right amount of sunlight seems to always be a problem for indoor gardeners. You should research each specific plant to see what it requires since all plants will have different requirements. Windowsills facing the side of the house where the sun rises are a prime spot for getting sunlight to your plants, no matter how much light they need.

To prevent accidental over fertilization most experts recommend using a potting soil mixture with the fertilizer already added in. This will eliminate the need for any type of fertilizer or growth enhancement for at least the first 2 months.

These are just a few of the many pieces of advice you can find to help make your indoor gardening adventure more prosperous.

I know how you feel, you love to have a killer indoor garden but may overwhelmed by it all. Then this is what you need to do. Go to 4indoorgarden.com to get some reviews on some popular and successful ‘indoor gardening‘ products.

Next If you are serious about having a beautiful garden, try one of them, they do work. Third enjoy the site and pick up some tips.

The start of the Winter Recession Garden is under way and I am pleased so far. I have my pots washed, sterilized and I added sterilized soil to more small terra cotta pots. I already have lettuce, spinach, onions and garlic growing.

And I have a cherry tomato plant hanging plant and strawberry hanging plant already growing and producing.

My next step is to add a few more vegetables and a few herbs. I have pots ready and I will grow these in a windowsill garden.

The herbs I grow are basil, chives, thyme and oregano. I start these from seed but I also want rosemary and sage. I think I will buy a plant for these herbs. It will give me the “instant big garden” look. And while I’m out buying herbs I’ll look for a lavendar plant.

I will be starting my pepper and tomato plants soon but I want to make compost and build a few raised bed planters for more planting room.

Tip: If you are planting tomatoes and peppers for outdoors you may wan to wait. I use a repotting method for tomatoes that gives me 3 foot producing tomatoes by May. It’s a bit of work so many people prefer to start plants in late March or April.

I also have a portable mini greenhouse to set up. That’s tomorrow project.

Making compost indoors.

I need a lot of compost to add to my potting soil for repotting and making hanging baskets so I make my own compost indoors. I am using the downstairs basement for my project. I have brought in two large plastic 55-gallon barrels. I placed 6 inches of pebbles in the bottom for drainage. I don’t have drainage holes in these barrels so I have to make sure I don’t add to much water to the compost. (All compost needed a little moisture to start to work.)

Next I have compost material I have saved. First I add about 9 inches of straw, 9 inches of shredded leaves, 9 inches of old sawdust that has broken down already. I will add 3 inches of fresh sawdust to help the pile work and top off the mix with a thin layer of peat. I will also dust the top layer with old rabbit manure.

And believe it or not, I am adding ½ can of coke to each compost barrel, which I will sprinkle on top of the mix. For some reason coke really helps break down a compost bin. In the summer months I would use the herbs comfrey, yarrow or add fresh grass clippings. And for a few days I will cover the barrels with clear plastic to hold in heat and moisture.

I can either let the compost containers sit like this for a week or stir it up to help it compost faster. For today it’s sitting. I will stir it up when I add kitchen table scraps. (Fresh vegetables, coffee grounds and eggshells only. No meat or grease items)

Uisng a composting method like this I can usually create good usable compost in two weeks.

I have a start on two working compost bins so I will sort through seeds to see what I can start in a few days and call my winter gardening quits for today.

Often times summer is so busy you don’t get the jobs done you need to so winter is the perfect time to concentrate on garden tasks.

One job I tend to put off is sort through the garden tools and cleaning them. At this time it’s best to dispose of any tools you aren’t using. Actually I don’t get rid of tools, I turn them into garden art. But if you aren’t using a tool – find another use for it.

Winter passes along much faster is you start “garden research”. It’s the perfect time to look through garden and landscape magazines and mentally plan your garden. When you find plants that interest you, research them on the Internet or check out some books to find out how well they will grow in your area.

Take a visit to your local garden center or greenhouse. The colors of flowers will make you feel better about the cold weather outdoors. And don’t be surprised if you come home with a new plant or two.

Check out gardening catalogs. There may be new seeds or plants you want to try, but be forewarned – order now! It’s amazing how fast certain seeds and plants will sell out.

Contact you garden friends and trade some seeds. Its fun and will save you money that you can spend on other garden items.

Plant some potted plants you really like that can’t be outdoors in the winter. You can enjoy them inside when the weather is cold and move them outdoors in the warmer spring and summer weather.

I usually start a windowsill garden and this year I have a winter recession garden.

So far my winter recession garden has two windowsill planters, four containers, two hanging planters and soon I will be filling my portable mini greenhouse, which is 6 foot by 3 foot and perfect for an indoor seed-starting garden.

Today is day one of my Winter Recession Garden.

I have left over seeds from summer, which are still viable so I will not be buying any seeds at this time. Fresh seeds also do not hit the stores until later February or March in my zone 5 climate.

Tip: Order your seeds from catalogs as soon as possible. I always enjoy ordering seeds when he snow is falling and is too cold to want to be outdoors

Today I am organizing my seeds and cleaning my potting containers and raised bed containers.

I clean my pots in a mild bleach and warm water then I also use dish soap for one more cleaning. I let the pots air dry. If there is any staining on the pots I use either red cider vinegar or baking soda to remove it. I want to make sure any dirt or bacteria is not on the pots.

I will also be building indoor raised beds for starting seeds this year. I am using old drawers from vintage dressers that were about to be tossed. I will need to line the drawers to make sure hat if the wood was treated any chemicals will not affect the soil. The drawers do not looked treated and are very old, but I will take the added precaution anyways.

I will need to drill drainage holes in the drawers and make sure the soil drains well. Directions will follow for this project in a few days.

Next I will check my soil. I use a mix of compost and sterilized soil mix but you may want to use just a soilless potting mix. If I feel I might have a soil mildew problem or if I am concerned about my lighting I use a soilless potting mix.

This year I have a strong natural lighting and will use a few watering tricks that have halted any mildew or soggy soil problems.

Once my soil and pots are prepared I will take stalk of my planting area. Its still cold here in NW PA and if I heat the greenhouse it will cost a lot. So this year I am using the basement apartment to grow my garden. The basement was severely damaged in flooding this summer so it’s the perfect place to use this winter as its just sitting there waiting to be redone.

I have two wonderful windows with natural lighting that I will sit my seedling by. And believe it or not, I have a small portable mini greenhouse that I plan to set up by the one window that has a draft to protect the plants and add more heat to the area. This area will be for plants that want more heat like tomatoes and peppers. Leafy greens will do just fine by the other window.

And to make better use of my lighting, my plants will be placed vertically by the windows. The dresser drawer raised beds will be used in the mini greenhouse and pots will be placed on glass shelves I am making for the windows or in hanging pots and baskets.

So now that I have a plan in place and my seeds set aside, its time to get busy.

And as expected, greens can be easily grown in the winter along with herbs, a few edible flowers, onions and garlic. But I am also growing tomatoes, a few bean plants, peppers, and I am trying a few cucumber plants. A few of these plans will need hand pollinated but its winter and I am trying to distract myself from the snow that is falling and covering the ground.

My next post will tell how to create the dresser drawer raised beds and how to make a warmer climate area in your home, particularly if you have limited space

Indoor gardening is an area that I will being using more, both for flowers and vegetables. Indoor gardening has many benefits including space and time saving methods.

Indoor Gardening? There are many reasons to consider indoor gardening.

I have been an avid outdoor gardener for many years but each year I find myself growing more plants indoors. For me a short growing climate, weather concerns and the fact I like to be surrounded by living plants has lead to this change.

I also find indoor gardening easier in many ways.

For those who in cities and have limited space the indoor garden is a perfect solution gardening. And it’s a proven fact that plants help clean and purifies air adding health and less stress into many peoples lives.

Some plants are low maintenance and require little light, while others will need constant care. So choosing the amount of time you want to spend on plants will be an important consideration. And remember, all plants require watering and fertilizing.

Indoor growing considerations

First, identify the lighting conditions in each of the rooms where you plan to grow plants. Mark each room as either dim, bright direct or bright indirect. Then, for each room, consider only plants that thrive in that lighting condition.

Palm plants will require direct light, herbs and vegetables grow in bright sunlight, and bamboo plants can grow in dark indoor conditions. With the wide variety of plants and lighti9ng that can be added to the home, it is now possible to grow almost any plant.

Temperature and moisture as the next most important factors after lighting. If the temperature of your indoor space ranges from 65 to 80 F, you should only consider plants that thrive within this temperature range. You also need to check for drafts. Many plants will not handle a draft or cold wind.

Look at the space you have available. Some plants vary in height from a few inches to several feet. Fortunately, you can control the height of the plant by the size of the pot. Use small pots to restrict plant growth. And you may want to look into vertical growing or growing walls.

I have seen growing walls that add light, color and even seem to add additional space in a room. Vertical growing makes the most out of available space and has numerous growing advantages.

One overlooked area in plant care is the needs of your favorite plants. Besides watering, most plants need fertilizing, trimming, repotting and often leaf picking.

I had absolutely no luck growing African Violets until my neighbor told me they need and thrive in northern lighting. I switched my plants location and the plants grew beautifully!

And last but not least, buy plants that are either practical or appealing to you. If a plant isn’t aesthetically pleasing, consider growing a vegetable that you can eat. Many vegetable and herb plants are beautiful.

Indoor gardening is an area that I will being using more, both for flowers and vegetables. I plan to use container gardening, vertical gardening, small space gardening ideas and greenhouse gardening. I also hope to try a little hydroponic gardening methods.

I plan on doing a lot more indoor gardening this year. One reason is home grown food is healthier and my produce will have no chemicals. And hydroponic gardening will be a new type of gardening for me.

I plan on doing a lot more indoor gardening this year. One reason is home grown food is healthier and my produce will have no chemicals and the other reason is our summer was pretty much non-existent and my garden was reduces in size to deal with the weather.

So I am not burned out on gardening this year and there are areas I want to experiment in. One area is small space gardening techniques, growing a variety of plants in a small space to see exactly what I can successfully grow.

Another area is hydroponic gardening.

When I first read about hydroponic gardening I was put off on this style of gardening. The list of chemical made me think the food would be toxic! But as I read more these are chemicals in the soil and are needed to grow. We also need these chemicals in our systems to be healthy.

So this winter I will be experimenting in different styles on hydroponic gardening. Vertical gardening, growing walls and greenhouse hydroponic will all be in the plan.

So if you are a pro in hydroponic gardening join in and offer suggestions.

And if you are a novice, like me, be prepared for an adventure.

In the next few weeks you will see a lot of articles by guest writers who know about this topic than I do. And hopefully in the late winter and spring I will have a wonderful garden to show off.

Normally, when individuals decide to begin hydroponic gardening, they will set up a system wherever they have some additional space, such as the basement. Obviously, though, most folks aren’t interested in letting their hydroponic garden invade their homes!

That’s why many individuals who are committed to hydroponics will look into purchasing or constructing a greenhouse.

Growing your plants in a greenhouse is preferable in many ways to just setting them up in an unused area of your home. You’ll find that if you have your garden inside a greenhouse it’s much simpler to create an environment which will permit it to thrive.

Temperature, ventilation and lighting are all easier to control. As well, you need lots of room in order to install the irrigation and lighting systems that are needed for hydroponic gardening. You can install this equipment precisely where you need it in a greenhouse. Controlling the water and lighting are more imperative in a hydroponics garden compared to a normal garden.

Lighting is in fact the main reason why a greenhouse is so ideal for a hydroponic garden. When you grow plants hydroponically, it is vital that they get adequate amounts of light. But it is also important to remember that too much direct light allows algae to grow and that is not useful.

In a greenhouse setting, daylight is filtered and diffused naturally. It’s even possible to regulate the lighting level and angle of sunlight with blinds or shutters. Less energy consumption is another advantage as you won’t need to continually run the hydroponic lights.

When you have a greenhouse, you’ll see that the system for providing nutrients to your plants is less difficult to set up and maintain. This is vital to how well your hydroponic specimens grow and thrive. When plants grow in solution rather than the ground, the pH content can change more rapidly.

There will be great variations in alkaline and acid levels because it’s all dependent on the water. With a greenhouse, it’s not difficult to implement an automated system of pH control, which gives you a break from forever checking the levels.

The temperature reading is also imperative in terms of hydroponic gardening. You’ll be able to keep heaters at bay when a greenhouse is well built as it does a decent job at maintaining the temperature.

This is particularly useful if you live somewhere that gets cold but has plenty of sun. You can also install air vents and fans to regulate the temperature in your greenhouse even more exactly.

There is a good selection of greenhouses kits to be found, however you can also build one yourself from scratch. The scope of the available models and sizes is quite large. Should your hydroponic garden become larger you can add on to a number of the greenhouse packages that are available. As you can see, many worthwhile factors exist for using a greenhouse for hydroponic gardening.

Hydroponics is an increasingly popular technique for year-round, indoor gardening. Find out more at Hydroponic Gardening.

With continuing economic uncertainty foreign holidays are becoming more of a luxury than ever and families are looking for other ways to enjoy their summer.

Adding a conservatory to your home, in the long run, can save you money, increase the value of your property and provide you with a place to relax and enjoy the summer from your own home.

The positive personal impact of gardening cannot be overstated. From the sheer beauty of the plants, to the tranquility and sense of accomplishment growing plants can bring, a conservatory can make a huge contribution to the quality of life enjoyed by its owners.

Some people love the idea of having fresh flowers or lovely plants available but are stymied by the costs or the difficulty of keeping plants alive in a harsh environment.

The conservatory allows these people to indulge in a luxury at a fraction of the cost involved in purchasing plants from a retail outlet. Since the conservatory is a controlled environment, it is also possible to have a flourishing garden of plants that would simply die if left to the whims of Mother Nature.

The conservatory allows year round growing of healthy vegetables for far less than purchasing them. In addition to cutting the cost of living, the wise conservatory owner has complete control over the plants and the chemicals associated with those plants.

Conservatories are a multiple use addition. It is very simple to add passive solar heating or electricity production to a conservatory. The wise home owner who takes advantage of this possibility can simultaneously reduce his or her costs and reduce the environmental impact he or she causes simply by living life.

Conservatories are often viewed as a luxury that, especially in the current economic climate, many think they cannot afford. However, the addition of a conservatory to your home may prove to be a wise economic decision. There is potential for long term money opportunities that would not otherwise be available without a conservatory.

Today we depend upon large supermarket chains to provide our food. However, with the future sustainability of the planet in question we can save money and increase sustainability by begging to grow our own produce. Conservatories are a great help to begin saving money and growing our own food.

As well as offering an escape from a noisy household, providing sheltered enjoyment of your garden area and adding further space to your property a conservatory can help save money and increase the quality of life you enjoy in your home.

This you tube shows a very successful indoor vegetable and flower garden. It proves that with proper lighting and care a garden will grow anywherre, even indoors.

Spring is slowly arriving here in NW Pennsylvania. The snow is melted and today was actually in the 50’s but it was overcast and a bit dreary. I spent some time cleaning the yard of broken branches. I also looked the perennial storing bed over and decided I would split the perennial ground cover plants in a week or two.

With the cold and rain I decided today would be an indoor day. My goals for today were clean my indoor plants and get them ready for spring. I also sorted through some of more unusual seeds and pulled them aside to start.

While looking online today I found this you tube on an indoor vegetable garden. Between the color and the music I found it relaxing and put me in the mood to get serious in my greenhouse. I must admit my indoor garden is not this nice, but its incentive to make it so.

I like the use of the windows, window lights and containers. She has very nice small vegetable mini containers growing that mix color and texture. It just proves gardening does not have to be dull or boring.

The window boxes also worked well and the mix of flowers and herbs worked well. I would like my indoor garden to look this nice. Maybe with the addition of the sunroom I plan to have up for next year it will.
