Garden Lore – Old Wives Tales – Fact or Fiction

Some farmers believe that plants, which grow above ground, should always be planted in the morning, like beans cucumbers, peas and melons. They will grow upwards with the rising sun.

Plants like potatoes, onions and radishes that grow underground should be planted in the afternoon so that they will grow downward with the sinking sun.

Some farmers also believe that plants that grow underground should be planted in the dark of the moon and plants that grow aboveground should be planted in the light of the moon

Many of these beliefs are called Old Wives Tales and are still practiced today.
